Cordwood Chicken Coop

Cordwood Chicken Coop

The housing for your chickens can be as simple or as fancy as your imagination and budget allow. The birds dictate the basic criteria.

Do you want a chicken coop that will make every chook for miles around the green with envy? Here’s a great-looking coop that will protect your chooks from predators and bad weather. Build your backyard chickens a cordwood chicken castle!

Cordwood construction is an old and straightforward building technique that makes use of wood and mortar. It’s really simple – instead of bricks or stones, wood is set in a bed of mortar which is slightly smaller than the width of the wood. Put more mortar around and over the wood, and repeat the process until you’ve completed your walls.

While it sounds really easy and simple, we do recommend doing some research and reading before doing it yourself. Lots of details need to be considered to be able to build a good structure using cordwood. For one, the walls of a cordwood structure generally need to be around 12 to 18 inches thick. For people with a small backyard, this dimension can be a bit too much. But depending on the size of your chicken coop and yard, you might be able to build a cordwood castle with six-inch walls. Again, make sure you do enough research and ask people who are knowledgeable on this subject. :)
