DIY Wall Mounted Drying Rack: Save Spave in 10 Steps

Not enough space for drying all the laundry? Then make some by mounting a DIY drying rack on your wall!

Some clothes are not meant to be put in the dryer and it’s not always convenient to hang them outside! Sure there are lots of drying racks available. But they take up floor space and need a home when they’re not being used! A wall-mounted drying rack is a much nicer solution :)

You can buy new materials for this project but a much cheaper and simpler solution is to upcycle a playpen or crib! It’s an easy and inexpensive solution you can accomplish easily over the weekend.

Making a DIY Wall Mounted Drying Rack

You’ll need these materials:

• 2 x 2’ Precut Birch (1/2 inch thick)
• 2 pcs 1/2 x 2” Poplar Boards
• 2 pcs 3/8” Dowel Rods (48” long)
• Sash Lock
• Narrow Loose Pin Hinges (set of two)
• D Ring Hangers (for mounting on the wall)
• Bracketed Hinge for side (or chain with small screw eyes)
• 3 pcs White Porcelain Knobs
• Primer and Paint of choice
• Wood Filler

And these tools:

• Drill
• Paintbrush
• Saw
• Mallet
• Hammer

Steps:

Step 1: Prepare the Materials

1. Sand the precut birch and poplar boards to remove any rough edges and ensure smooth surfaces for painting.
2. Measure and cut the 3/8” dowel rods to your desired width for the drying rack. For this guide, each dowel should be 24 inches long.
3. Use wood filler to fill any imperfections or knots in the wood. Allow it to dry, then sand smooth.

Step 2: Assemble the Frame

1. Arrange the two poplar boards parallel to each other, creating the sides of the drying rack frame.
2. Use the 2 x 2’ birch board pieces as the top and bottom crossbars of the frame. Position them between the poplar boards to form a rectangle.
3. Drill pilot holes at the connection points to prevent splitting. Secure the frame with screws or wood glue for extra stability.

Step 3: Install the Dowel Rods

1. Measure and mark evenly spaced points along the two poplar boards for the dowel rods. A spacing of about 3 to 4 inches works well for most drying needs.
2. Drill 3/8” holes at the marked points, making sure the holes are straight and aligned across both boards.
3. Insert the dowel rods into the holes, applying wood glue to secure them in place. Use a mallet to gently tap the rods into position if needed.

Step 4: Add the Hinges

1. Attach the narrow loose pin hinges to one of the long sides of the frame. Position them at equal distances from the top and bottom corners.
2. Secure the other side of the hinges to the birch board that will act as the wall-mounted base.

Step 5: Add Support with Bracketed Hinges or Chains

1. Attach the bracketed hinge or chain with small screw eyes to the sides of the drying rack frame. This will provide support when the rack is open and prevent it from falling flat against the wall.
2. Ensure the support mechanism allows the rack to fold neatly when not in use.

Step 6: Install the Sash Lock

1. Mount the sash lock to the top of the drying rack frame and the wall-mounted base. This will keep the rack securely closed when folded against the wall.

Step 7: Attach the D-Ring Hangers

1. Screw the D-ring hangers to the back of the wall-mounted base. These will be used to secure the drying rack to the wall.
2. Measure and mark the desired location on the wall for the rack. Make sure it is level and at a convenient height for use.
